Shirvan kilim from Azerbaijan in the north-east of the Caucasus. Antique piece, fragmented condition but fantastic colors and strong archaic motifs displayed in horizontal bands. Entirely wool, but for the white parts (as white wool is getting yellow over the years) cotton was used. Woven in one single width, on a vertical loom. Now presented at the exposition ‘Fragments of Woven Beauty’ (look under ‘special events’ on this website). 19th century or older. 170 x 230 cm.
