A small but typical Gandharan head of the Buddha.
Made of stucco; the back shows very good the typical Gandharan technique of starting with a core around which layers of thinner and thinner stucco are put to end with a perfectly smooth surface, that undoubtedly was painted, but now is covered with a clay and soil crust.
The ushnisha or hair protuberance was probably made with a mould.
Another typical Gandharan feature is the fact that the head has two perfectly sharp profiles, because, as they learned from the Greek, those heads were often made to be seen from two different angles of view.
Gandhara period, Hadda style, 3rd-5th century.
Height 95 mm, width 59 mm, depth 66 mm. Weight 208 g.
