A carved schist-stone panel from a Gandhara stupa drum. The panel shows a double frieze :the upper one, continuous, shows a caitya arch frieze with worshippers, their hands folded together. In between the caitya arches stand columns that support double –bracket capitals. Above this upper frieze runs a ‘cavetto’ border with centrally grooved lotus petals. The down frieze shows two scenes from the life of the Buddha, separated from each other by divider columns in Corinthian style: on the left the meditating Buddha surrounded by his two disciples , on the right the Buddha performing a miracle before an ascetic and accompanied by Vajrapani / Herakles (Hellenistic influence). Between the upper and down frieze runs an ‘ovolo’ border with pointed-leaf pattern.
Width 40cm Height 24.5cm Thickness 4.5cm. The down-left corner is broken off, but the general theme is well preserved.
