A beautiful wooden column with capital, carved with floral motifs. Swat Valley, Hindukush mountain range, north-west Pakistan. 19th or 18th century. The Valley of Swat was, between the 2nd and 5th century, an important center in the Gandhara Kingdom. And it is clear that some old Gandhara motifs survived the ages and continued to be used by the wood sculptors in the 18th and 19th centuries. See the motif of hanging bunch of flowers on the front of the column, see the running lotus blossom frieze on the upper border of the capital, see the lotus leave frieze on the vertical borders on left and right side of the column.
