A çüval or transport bag from Turcoman nomads (Sarykh or Ersari?). the front panel is knotted, the backside woven. Turkmenistan, ca 1900. The red field is dominated by five rows of four Memling guls (after the German born Flemish Renaissance painter Hans Memling 1430-1494 who sometimes used rugs with this type of hooked motifs in his paintings).

Under this gul field we see several letters and numbers (maybe somebody can decipher them?) that could be the names of a marrying couple and a date, so probably this piece was woven as part of the dowry. Also we see several tamga’s (branding marks used by nomadic tribes on their animals, tents and other belongings). So ethnographically a very interesting piece, in unrestored condition, with some losses at the sides and a small hole at the back (see pics). Ca 1900. 100 x 77cm.

Now presented at the exposition ‘Fragments of Woven Beauty’ (look under ‘special events’ on this website).
