A small but well preserved head of Buddha, rendered in frontal position and surrounded by a large, plain halo or nimbus. The ushnisha or hair protuberance and the long ears without jewelry identify him as Buddha.
Early Gandhara period, ca 2nd century. The moustache points to an origin in the Swat valley (northwest Pakistan). Height 62 mm (mounted 91 mm), width 61 mm depth 38mm. Weight 337 g.
The grey schist stone shows the normal erosion, no recent chips, and some shallow chisel grooves on the back of the halo.
